From May 1943 Josef Mengele, together with other Nazi doctors, worked at Auschwitz-Birkenau for the selection of prisoners arriving at the camp. In Auschwitz he has the opportunity to select a large number of human guinea pigs to be used for his research and experiments. He chose the twins to carry out research and experiments of which he was convinced that a racial genetic origin could be traced. At least 3,000 twins were selected. They were usually taken away from their parents to subject them to their pseudo-scientific research. However, every day the children were subjected to experiments. Every detail of their anatomy was carefully examined, studied and measured. Continuous blood tests or drug injections were part of the daily routine. These tests often caused severe pain and infections. Sometimes, surgical interventions were performed, performed without anesthesia, which could include the removal of organs, or the amputation of body parts. When one twin died, the other was killed with a heart injection of phenol, to examine and compare the effects of the disease.[All deaths were subject to autopsy which was carried out by Dr. Miklós Nyiszli, a Hungarian pathologist prisoner in Auschwitz, who had to draw up an accurate report for each one.[9Some organs, eyes, blood and tissue samples were sent to Verschuer at the Racial-Biological Research Institute in Berlin, where they were analyzed, with the aim of being able to find a substantial difference between the blood of Aryans and that of non-Aryans.
